There is an old lady in Buhiga, a village in rural Burundi. Her name is Gakobwa, which means “small girl” ; she is about 1,35m tall.
Some might think Gakobwa is another sad “story from Africa”. She has lost four of her five children, was widowed 15 years ago, accused to be a witch, suffered from leprosy, TB and Malaria repetitively.
Yet, I believe that the “small girl” is a fundamental human success story. One to be admired and told.
Look into her face and you see: she’s filled with resilience, wittiness, humor, wisdom. In midday sun or darkness, she walks at a pace difficult to match; sees the rain falling before it does; has a friendly word for anyone crossing her path; has breakfast at the police station; knows what to get where, who to ask.
And if for a change she doesn’t, she just tries – and gets there. Gakobwa: a tale of dignity and resilience.
