Mvugo village lies in the south of Burundi, beautifully placed at the shore of Lake Tanganyika, the deep water that separates Burundi and the DR Congo. Its courageous fishermen take their boats and lamps to venture into the waves with their admirable skills. When the moon is right, revenues are respectable.
With cash flowing in, not only the consumption of alcohol in bars is on the rise. Young girls and women from close by Tanzania come. Short of economic alternatives, they offer their bodies for pay.
Prostitution exists anywhere in the world and not limited to Mvugo or Burundi. Yet, the correlation of multiple sex partners, a small micro-cosmos and inadequate awareness sharply aggravate the HIV/Aids prevalence here. Many of the fishermen die and so do their families, as the men often infect their wives who live just a few hills away.
Prostitution will not end. The rules of demand and offer want it . It can only be hoped that with a much needed better level of education and awareness, the use of condoms and other measures will help to curb the tragedy. Because in Mvugo and elsewhere, it takes from the best.
